Citing and Plagiarism

Notes-Bibliography

Notes-Bibliography uses a combination of footnotes or endnotes and a bibliography at the end. 

Pay special attention to formatting and punctuation!

 

General Model-Books

 

Note- 1. Author's first name Author's last name, Title of Book (Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication), page number.

Bibliography- Author's last name, Author's first name. Title of Book. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

Tip- The Note includes a number before the entry, page number at the end of the entry and parenthesis around the publication information. The Bibliography entry does not have the number before the entry, does not have a page number, does not use parenthesis and switches the order of the Author's names.

 

Book by one author

Note- 1. Larry McMurtry, Crazy Horse (New York: Viking, 1999), 49. 

Bibliography- McMurtry, Larry. Crazy Horse. New York: Viking, 1999.

 

 

Book by multiple authors

Note- 2. Herbert S. Parmet and Marie B. Hecht, Aaron Burr Portrait of an Ambitious Man (New York: Macmillan, 1967), 227.

Bibliography- Parmet, Herbert, S., and Marie B. Hecht. Aaron Burr Portrait of an Ambitious Man. New York: Macmillan, 1967.

Tip-  In bibliography, invert the first author's name but keep the rest of the authors' names first name then last name. Keep authors in the order that they appear. Three or more authors, separate authors with a comma, use and (not &) before last author.

 

 

Book with editor but no author and edition of book

Note- 3. Vilhjalmur Stefansson, ed. Great Adventures and Explorations, New Rev. ed. (New York: Dial Press, 1966), 546.

Bibliography- Stefansson, Vilhjalmur, ed. Great Adventures and Explorations. New Rev. ed. New York: Dial Press, 1966.

Tip- use ed. after an editor or eds. for multiple editors. Edition is listed after the title. If edition is a number, the number can be used. Example: 3rd ed. 

 

 

Chapter from a single author book

Note- 5. Melissa Lukeman Bohrer, "A Sister in Arms: Molly Pitcher," in Glory, Passion, and Principle (New York: Atria Books, 2003), 155.

Bibliography- Bohrer, Melissa Lukeman. "A Sister in Arms: Molly Pitcher." In Glory, Passion, and Principle, 155-178. New York: Atria Books, 2003.  

 

 

Edited book with chapters/works by different authors

Note- 6. William Iseminger, "Mighty Cahokia," in Exploring the Past, eds. James M. Bayman and Miriam T. Stark (Durham: Carolina Academic Press, 2000), 343-349.

Bibliography- Iseminger, William. "Mighty Cahokia." In Exploring the Past, edited by James M. Bayman and Miriam T. Stark. Durham: Carolina Academia Press, 2000.

Tip- When there are both authors and editors, editors come after the book title

 

 

Electronic Journal

Tip- Always capitalize seasons, even if they are not capitalized in the original text. Always include the DOI; if there is no DOI then include the URL.

Tip- Sometimes page numbers are not available if a magazine is online. Dates of magazines are not in paranthesis like the date in journals
