Watchlist

Top text reads my watchlist. After a summary, there are options to watch now, share or remove.

My Watchlist is a good place to put videos that you want to watch at a later date, or videos that you want to come back to.  When you no longer need a video, you can remove it from the list.

Playlist

Buttons read My List, Share, Create Clip/Playlist and More

You can add a video to a playlist by clicking the Create Clip/Playlist button.

Text reads Existing Playlist with 'Libraries' and '3 clips' below it. There is the option to add a video or edit playlist. Under that there is 'create new playlist'.

When you click that button, you have the option to add the existing video into an already existing playlist, or create a new playlist and add it to that.

When you add a video to a playlist, it gives you the option of creating a clip.   While that does sound like it allows you to select a scene from the video and play that, that is not the case.  Kanopy considered individual videos clips, and while you can reorganize or remove videos; if one wanted to show a specific scene in a presentation, one would have to preload the video and have it set to that scene.

Searching

Searching in Kanopy can be done in many ways.  One of them is by using the search bar on the top of the webpage.  If you are looking for a specific title, or a creator, this would be a good place to search.  You also have the option of searching by subjects, or terms.

First three results for chemistry on Kanopy.

When we search 'chemistry', there are wide variety of materials found in the 46 pages of results.  Using more specific terms like 'Marie Curie' or 'Radium' for your search, can help you narrow down your results.

Browse by subject

If you want to browse by subject, click the word Browse next to the magnifying glass on the search bar.  It will bring you to a page called Browse by Subject.  On this page, there are a number of broad groupings, with more narrow topics listed under them

The Browse by Subject page on Kanopy. The broad subjects of Sciences and Social Sciences are listed first, with more narrow topics listed underneath.

When a more narrow topic is selected, you are brought to a category page with multiple headings breaking down the videos into further categories.

Catagories on the chemistry page. Under each heading, there are three videos visible.

You can scroll through each category to view more videos, or scroll down to find more headings.

When you find something on Kanopy that you think might be useful or interesting, you have the option of scrolling down to see the summary.  It can be important to do this, because while the above video did come up in the results for Marie Curie, it is more focused on public speaking, and may not be useful source for a paper on her life.   In that summary area, you'll also get useful information like the running time, and the year it was released.

Directly under the video, you have the option to add it to your list (if you've made an account), share (with a link or to social media),and  you can create a clip or a playlist.  Under the More tab, you have the option to view the transcript, or create a citation in APA, MLA, Chicago or Harvard styles.

Videos on Kanopy will start playing when you click the triangle icon in the center.  Once the video starts, you will be able to use a bar on the bottom of the player to turn on closed captions, or bring the video into full screen.
